Understanding Vimshottari Dasha

Vimshottari Dasha is the timing system at the heart of Vedic astrology: a 120-year cycle that divides life into nine planetary periods called Mahadashas, each governed by one of the nine grahas. Where a birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky, the Dasha system answers the question of when, telling you which planet is running the show now and therefore which themes are active in your life. Your starting Dasha and its balance at birth are set by the exact position of the Moon in its Nakshatra at the moment you were born.

The calculator above shows your current Mahadasha and Antardasha with the full timeline. The sections below explain how the system works and how to read it.

The nine Mahadashas

The cycle always runs in the same order, with fixed lengths that add up to 120 years: Sun (6 years), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17), Ketu (7), and Venus (20). You begin partway through this sequence, at the planet ruling your birth Nakshatra, and continue from there. Most people live through five to seven Mahadashas in a lifetime, each one a distinct chapter coloured by its ruling planet.

Antardasha: periods within periods

Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (also called Bhuktis), sub-periods ruled by each of the nine planets in turn, in the same Vimshottari order and proportional to their Mahadasha lengths. The interplay of the Mahadasha lord and the Antardasha lord is what lets Jyotish time events precisely: a Jupiter Mahadasha feels very different in its Saturn Antardasha than in its Venus one. Deeper still are Pratyantardashas, a third level used for fine timing.

What your current period means

A Dasha does not simply deliver good or bad results. The ruling planet activates the houses it owns and occupies in your chart, so the same Saturn Dasha can bring steady promotion to one person and hard lessons to another, depending on how Saturn is placed and dignified for them. Read the period through the planet's strength, house, and relationships in your own Kundali, not by reputation alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. It divides a human lifespan into a 120-year cycle of 9 planetary Mahadashas, each ruled by one of the 9 planets. The sequence and starting Mahadasha are determined by the Moon's Nakshatra at birth. Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardashas and Pratyantardashas, allowing precise timing of life events.

How is Vimshottari Dasha calculated?

The Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines the starting Mahadasha and its remaining balance. The 120-year sequence is: Sun (6y) → Moon (10y) → Mars (7y) → Rahu (18y) → Jupiter (16y) → Saturn (19y) → Mercury (17y) → Ketu (7y) → Venus (20y). AstroJanamPatrika uses Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsa for precise calculation.

What does my current Mahadasha mean?

Each Mahadasha is coloured by the ruling planet's significations and its placement in your natal chart. Jupiter Dasha generally brings wisdom and fortune; Saturn Dasha brings karmic lessons and discipline; Rahu Dasha (18 years) brings ambition and unconventional experiences. The actual results depend on the planet's strength and house placement in your specific chart.

What is an Antardasha (Bhukti)?

Each Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas (Bhuktis / sub-periods), each ruled by one of the 9 planets. The Antardasha sequence starts with the Mahadasha ruler's own Antardasha and follows the Vimshottari order. Duration is proportional to each planet's total Mahadasha years. Events in life are timed by both Mahadasha and Antardasha.

Is Vimshottari Dasha the only Dasha system?

No, there are 40+ Dasha systems in classical Vedic texts, including Ashtottari, Yogini, and Narayana Dasha. However, Vimshottari is the most universally used, recommended by BPHS for the Kali Yuga. Professional Jyotishis often cross-reference Vimshottari with Yogini Dasha for confirmation of major events.
