Frequently Asked Questions
What are Navagraha?
Navagraha means 'nine planets' in Sanskrit. In Vedic astrology, the nine celestial bodies are: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Node of the Moon), and Ketu (South Node of the Moon). Each planet rules specific areas of life and transits through the 12 rashis over varying periods.
What is Lahiri Ayanamsa?
Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the tropical (Western) and sidereal (Vedic) zodiacs, caused by the precession of the equinoxes. Lahiri Ayanamsa, also called Chitrapaksha Ayanamsa, is the official ayanamsa adopted by the Government of India in 1955. AstroJanamPatrika uses Lahiri Ayanamsa with Swiss Ephemeris for all planetary calculations, giving sidereal (Nirayana) positions used in Vedic Jyotish.
What does retrograde mean in Vedic astrology?
A planet is retrograde (Vakri) when it appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's perspective due to relative orbital velocities. In Vedic astrology, retrograde planets are considered stronger (more intense) in the houses they occupy. Saturn and Jupiter retrograde occur annually; Mercury retrograde happens 3–4 times per year. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde by definition.
What is the difference between sidereal and tropical zodiac?
The tropical zodiac (used in Western astrology) is fixed to the seasons — Aries always begins at the vernal equinox. The sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology) is aligned to actual star constellations. Due to precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs are currently about 23–24° apart (Lahiri Ayanamsa ~23.9°). This means your 'sun sign' in Vedic astrology is typically one sign behind your Western sun sign.
How do planetary transits affect my rashi?
Planetary transits (Gochara) refer to current planetary positions overlaid on your natal Moon sign (Rashi). Each planet's transit produces different effects depending on which house it occupies relative to your Moon. For example, Saturn's 7.5-year transit (Sade Sati) over the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon is considered a period of challenge and transformation. AstroJanamPatrika shows real-time Navagraha positions for accurate transit reading.
