Understanding Kaal Sarp Dosha

Kaal Sarp Dosha forms when all seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) fall on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis, leaving them hemmed between the two lunar nodes. Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets but the points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, and in Vedic astrology they stand for karma, desire, and detachment. When every planet sits within their grip, the chart's energy is said to be channelled and intensified rather than freely expressed, which is why the dosha is linked with a life of strong highs and lows.

The calculator above checks your chart for the dosha and names the type. The sections below explain what the type means, what a partial dosha is, and how seriously to take it.

The twelve types

Kaal Sarp Dosha is divided into twelve types, each named after a sacred serpent and defined simply by the house Rahu occupies, from Anant (Rahu in the 1st) through to Sheshnag (Rahu in the 12th), with Ketu always in the opposite house. The type points to the area of life the dosha colours most strongly: the self and health, wealth and family, career, marriage, or children, following the meaning of Rahu's house.

Full and partial dosha

A full Kaal Sarp Dosha needs every planet inside the Rahu-Ketu arc. If even one planet sits outside the axis, the dosha is partial: that planet acts as a relief valve, letting some energy flow freely and noticeably softening the effect. Many charts flagged as Kaal Sarp are in fact partial, which is why the calculator reports this separately.

How seriously to take it

Among Jyotish scholars the dosha is genuinely debated, and it is one of the most commercially over-hyped conditions in modern astrology. It can coincide with delays and obstacles, yet a great many highly successful people carry it in their charts. What matters is the whole picture: the strength of the chart, the Dasha running, whether the dosha is full or partial, and how well Rahu and Ketu themselves are placed. It is a factor to understand, not a verdict to fear.

Classical remedies centre on Rahu, Ketu, and Lord Shiva: chanting the Rahu beej mantra, offering at a Shiva temple (especially on Nag Panchami), and Kaal Sarp Shanti puja at Trimbakeshwar or Mahakaleshwar. See the Navagraha mantras for the Rahu and Ketu beej mantras, and the Shiva hub for the devotional texts. The gemstone linked to Rahu is Hessonite (Gomed), worn only after a trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?

Kaal Sarp Dosha occurs when all seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn) are placed between Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart, with no planet outside the Rahu-Ketu axis. This hemmed condition is said to constrain planetary energy, creating challenges in the areas of life signified by the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy.

How many types of Kaal Sarp Dosha are there?

There are 12 types, named after sacred snakes and classified by the house Rahu occupies: Anant (1st), Kulik (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhapal (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshak (7th), Karkotak (8th), Shankachud (9th), Ghatak (10th), Vishadhar (11th), and Sheshnag (12th). Ketu is always in the house directly opposite Rahu.

Is Kaal Sarp Dosha always harmful?

The effects are debated among Jyotish scholars. While it can bring delays and obstacles, many successful leaders and achievers historically had Kaal Sarp in their charts. The actual impact depends on the overall chart strength, the Dasha running, whether the dosha is partial, and the dignity of Rahu and Ketu. A contextual interpretation by a qualified Jyotishi is recommended.

What is a partial Kaal Sarp Dosha?

A partial Kaal Sarp Dosha occurs when most but not all seven planets are hemmed, with one or more planets outside the Rahu-Ketu axis. These planets act as partial neutralisers, significantly reducing the dosha's intensity. Partial Kaal Sarp is generally considered milder than the full dosha.

What are the best remedies for Kaal Sarp Dosha?

The most effective remedies include: Kaal Sarp Shanti puja at Trimbakeshwar (Nashik) or Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain) during Nag Panchami; chanting the Rahu Mantra (Om Raam Rahave Namah) 108 times; offering milk at a Shiva temple on Nag Panchami; wearing Hessonite (Gomedha) or 8-mukhi Rudraksha after astrological consultation; and charitable donations on Saturdays.
