Understanding Mangal Dosha (Manglik)
Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha, occurs when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart counted from the Lagna (Ascendant). A careful reading also checks Mars from the Moon and from Venus, since both relate to marriage and emotional life. Because Mars is the planet of energy, drive, and conflict, its presence in these marriage-sensitive houses is traditionally believed to bring friction or delay to married life. Around half of all charts carry some form of this placement, so it is far more common, and far less alarming, than popular astrology suggests.
Whether the dosha actually matters depends entirely on the rest of the chart. The calculator above shows where your Mars sits and flags the dosha; the sections below explain what that means and what reduces or cancels it.
Why these six houses
Each house touches marriage from a different angle: the 1st (self and temperament), 2nd (family and speech), 4th (domestic peace and the home), 7th (the spouse and partnership itself), 8th (marital longevity and intimacy), and 12th (the marriage bed, expenses, and separation). Mars energising any of these can show up as a strong temper, clashes with the partner or in-laws, or restlessness in domestic life, depending on the house and the sign.
How strong is the dosha
Placement alone is not the whole story. A dignified Mars (in its own signs Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn) behaves very differently from a weak or debilitated Mars (in Cancer). An aspect from Jupiter or a strong benefic can soften it considerably, while a Mars also afflicted by Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu intensifies it. The house, the sign, the aspects, and the Dasha running at the time of marriage all matter more than a simple yes or no.
What cancels Mangal Dosha (Dosha Bhanga)
Classical texts list several cancellations: both partners being Manglik (the doshas offset each other); Mars in its own or exalted sign; a Jupiter or benefic aspect on Mars; Mars in particular signs in certain houses; and the absence of the dosha in the Navamsa (D9) chart. Many traditions also hold that the effect weakens with age. Because these factors interact, a single rule rarely settles the matter; the full chart and a proper Kundali Milan do.
The honest perspective
Mangal Dosha is one of the most over-feared ideas in modern astrology. Countless Manglik people have long, happy marriages, and it should never be the sole basis for accepting or rejecting a match. Treat it as one input among many: the overall Ashtakoot score, the strength of the 7th house and its lord, Dasha compatibility, and the partner's chart together give the real picture. For remedies, Hanuman, the presiding deity of Mars, is the classical first resort.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha)?
Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha, is a Vedic astrological condition where Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Kundali from the Lagna. These six houses are considered sensitive in the context of marriage. Mars in these positions is believed to bring conflict and challenges to the marital relationship.
Does Mangal Dosha always affect marriage negatively?
Not necessarily. The effect depends on Mars's dignity (exalted vs debilitated), aspects from benefic planets like Jupiter, the overall chart strength, and the Dasha running at the time of marriage. Many Manglik people have happy, long marriages. The dosha is often overstated in popular astrology.
What cancels Mangal Dosha?
Several classical exceptions: (1) Both partners have Mangal Dosha, they cancel each other. (2) Mars is in Aries, Scorpio (own signs) or Capricorn (exalted). (3) Jupiter aspects Mars. (4) The dosha is absent in the Navamsa (D9) chart. (5) Strong Venus or Moon in the 2nd or 7th house. A qualified Jyotishi should evaluate these together.
Should I only marry someone who also has Mangal Dosha?
Classical texts suggest both partners' Mangal Doshas cancel each other. However, modern Jyotish experts caution against making marriage decisions solely on this basis. Overall Ashtakoot score, Dasha compatibility, and 7th house strength are equally important. A comprehensive Kundali Milan analysis is recommended.
What are effective remedies for Mangal Dosha?
Classical remedies include: chanting the Mangal Beej Mantra (Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah) 108 times on Tuesdays; visiting Hanuman temple every Tuesday and Saturday; Tuesday fasts; donating red lentils or copper on Tuesdays; and performing Mangal Shanti puja. Red Coral (Munga) may be worn only after astrological consultation.
