What is a regional panchang or panjika?
Across India the same astronomy is framed by different regional almanacs — the Assamese and Bengali Panjika, the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam Panchangam, the Kannada Panchanga, the Odia Panji, the North-Indian Panchang and more. They share the tithi and nakshatra but differ in the month names, the era (samvat), and whether the month is reckoned by the Sun (solar) or the Moon (lunar).
How do the regional calendars differ?
Solar almanacs (Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese) begin each month when the Sun enters a new sign; lunar ones run new-moon to new-moon (amanta, in the south and west) or full-moon to full-moon (purnimanta, in the north). The month names and the new-year day vary accordingly.
How are these computed?
Every regional almanac here is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) by the modern drik method — the same engine behind the daily panchang — rather than reproduced from a printed almanac.
