Frequently Asked Questions

What is Panchang?

Panchang (Pañcāṅga) literally means "five limbs" in Sanskrit. The five elements are Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (auspiciousness index), Karana (half-Tithi), and Vara (weekday). Together they form the Vedic almanac used to determine auspicious timings for rituals, marriages, travel, business, and daily activities. AstroJanamPatrika calculates all five using Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsa.

What is Tithi?

Tithi is the lunar day in the Hindu calendar, determined by the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun in multiples of 12°. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month — 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning). Tithi governs which religious activities are appropriate each day and is used to determine festival dates.

What is Nakshatra?

Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology — constellations that the Moon passes through during its monthly orbit. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac and has a presiding deity, ruling planet, and specific qualities. The Moon's Nakshatra at birth determines the starting Dasha period in Vimshottari Dasha.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal is an approximately 90-minute inauspicious period each day, ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. It is calculated by dividing the daylight duration into 8 equal parts, with a different part assigned to Rahu based on the weekday. Starting new work, signing contracts, or conducting auspicious events during Rahu Kaal is traditionally avoided. AstroJanamPatrika calculates Rahu Kaal precisely from your city's actual Sunrise and Sunset.

What is Abhijit Muhurta?

Abhijit Muhurta is considered the most universally auspicious Muhurta of each day, occurring around solar noon. It spans approximately 48 minutes centered on the midpoint between Sunrise and Sunset. Any work started in Abhijit Muhurta is blessed with success. Wednesday's Abhijit Muhurta is especially powerful. AstroJanamPatrika computes this precisely for your city each day.
