Purnima is the full moon day, when the angular distance between Moon and Sun reaches 180°. It is the 15th and final tithi of the waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha), considered highly auspicious for puja, vrat, charity, and sacred baths in holy rivers.
What puja is done on Purnima?
Satyanarayan Puja is the classic Purnima observance in most households, along with a vrat through the day and moonrise offerings. Specific Purnimas carry their own rituals — Guru Purnima honours one's teachers, Sharad Purnima's moonlight is believed to carry amrita, and on Kartik Purnima lamps are lit for Dev Deepawali.
Why do Purnima dates change every year?
The lunar month is about 29.5 days, so twelve lunar months fall roughly 11 days short of the solar year. Purnima therefore shifts earlier each year against the Gregorian calendar, corrected periodically by an Adhika Masa — which is also why some years have 13 full moons.
