Each month begins at a Sankranti — the moment the Sun enters a new sidereal sign — and the twelve months run Medam, Edavam, Mithunam, Karkidakam, Chingam, Kanni, Thulam, Vrischikam, Dhanu, Makaram, Kumbham and Meenam. How is the Malayalam month reckoned?
It is solar: a month runs from one Sankranti to the next. Kerala counts the day of the new month from the sunrise after the Sankranti, so Medam begins on 15 April in 2026 — a day after the Tamil and Odia solar month.
