What is the difference between this and the Purnima/Amavasya pages?
This page lists the exact astronomical moment of each Full Moon and New Moon — when the Sun and Moon are exactly opposite (180°) or together (0°). The Purnima and Amavasya pages list the corresponding tithi (lunar day) and its start/end for observances. See /purnima and /amavasya for the tithi-based dates.
Why do eclipses happen on Full and New Moons?
A solar eclipse can only occur at a New Moon (Sun and Moon aligned) and a lunar eclipse only at a Full Moon (Sun and Moon opposite), when the Moon is also near a node. See the Grahan page for upcoming eclipses.
How are these moments calculated?
The Sun–Moon elongation is tracked with the Swiss Ephemeris; a Full Moon is the moment it reaches 180° and a New Moon the moment it reaches 0°, pinpointed by bisection.
