Shradh (Pitru Paksha)
Shradh is the rite of honouring and offering to departed ancestors (Pitru), performed to repay ancestral debt and secure their peace and blessings. It is central to the fortnight of Pitru Paksha.
When It Is Performed
During Pitru Paksha (the Krishna paksha of Ashwin), on the tithi of the ancestor's passing; Sarva Pitru Amavasya is for all ancestors. Also on Amavasya through the year.
Method (Step by Step)
- 1 Bathe and, where prescribed, invite a priest; perform on the ancestor's tithi.
- 2 Offer Tarpan — water with black sesame, kusha grass and barley — to the ancestors.
- 3 Prepare and offer Pind (rice balls) as Pind Daan, with devotion.
- 4 Feed Brahmins, cows, crows and the needy as part of the offering.
- 5 Pray for the peace and onward journey of the departed and seek their blessings.
