The Story
The katha is told as a chain of examples. Sage Narada, moved by the suffering he saw on earth, asked Lord Vishnu how ordinary people might be relieved of their troubles. Vishnu replied that whoever keeps the Satyanarayan Vrat with faith, listens to his story and shares the prasad will find their difficulties eased.
A poor Brahmin who lived by begging was the first to be shown the vrat. He kept it as instructed, and in time his poverty lifted and his home knew plenty. Seeing the change in him, a woodcutter learned of the vrat, kept it too, and likewise prospered.
A merchant who longed for a child promised to keep the vrat if he were blessed with one. A daughter was born to him, but caught up in trade and travel he kept putting off the vow. Each time he forgot or delayed, misfortune followed — his ship was seized, he was wrongly imprisoned — and each time, when he remembered the Lord and completed the vrat with a sincere heart, his fortunes were restored.
On his voyage home, the merchant again made light of the prasad, and his boat grew heavy and would not move; only when he received the offering with humility did it sail freely. His family, who had kept faith and completed the vrat in his absence, were reunited with him in joy.
