Om Jai Jagdish Hare (Vishnu Aarti)

ॐ जय जगदीश हरे

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is the most universally performed Aarti in all of India — it is sung in virtually every Hindu home and temple, during almost every puja regardless of the deity being worshipped. It was composed in 1871 by the Hindi author and saint Shradha Ram Phillauri, who wrote it as a devotional poem addressed to Vishnu as Jagdish — the Lord of the Universe. The Aarti praises Vishnu as the reliever of devotees' sorrows, the sustainer of the universe, and the ultimate refuge. Performed while waving a lamp (diya) in front of the deity, this Aarti unites devotees across all of India in a common prayer of adoration.

Frequently Asked Questions about Om Jai Jagdish Hare (Vishnu Aarti)

Who composed the Om Jai Jagdish Hare Aarti and when?

Om Jai Jagdish Hare was composed in 1871 by Pandit Shradha Ram Phillauri (1837–1881), a Hindi author, scholar, and social reformer from Phillaur in Punjab. He composed it as a devotional poem in Braj Bhasha Hindi. It was initially one of many stanzas in his devotional collection, but this particular composition became so popular that it spread across all of India within a generation and is now universally sung at every Hindu puja.

Why is the Om Jai Jagdish Hare Aarti performed at every puja, regardless of the deity?

Over generations, Om Jai Jagdish Hare transcended its origin as a Vishnu-specific aarti and became a universal Hindu prayer — sung at the end of pujas to Ganesha, Devi, Shiva, Rama, and all other deities. This is because its themes (God as protector, father, mother, ocean of compassion) are universal. Many devotees and temple priests treat it as the standard concluding aarti after the deity-specific aarti is performed.

What does "Jagdish" mean in this Aarti?

"Jagdish" (जगदीश) is a name of Vishnu/God meaning "Lord (Ish/Ishwar) of the Universe (Jagat)." Jagat means the world or universe, and Ish/Ishwar means the supreme lord or controller. Vishnu as Jagdish is the sustainer and governor of the entire cosmos — which is why this name is used in the aarti.

Why is Thursday (Guruvar) considered Vishnu's day?

Thursday is considered sacred to Vishnu because Vishnu is the preserver of the universe and the supreme Guru (divine teacher) — Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati), the planet associated with Thursday, is Vishnu's planet and governs wisdom, knowledge, and divine guidance. Devotees fast on Thursdays (Guruvara Vrat), wear yellow clothes, offer yellow flowers and bananas to Vishnu, and recite this Aarti as part of their observance.

How should the Aarti be performed correctly?

The Aarti is performed by waving a lamp (diya, camphor lamp, or multi-wicked aarti plate) in a clockwise circular motion in front of the deity's image or idol, while the congregation sings the Aarti together. The lamp is then passed around so devotees can receive the sacred warmth/light (prasad of the Aarti) on their palms and face. Typically, a conch (shankha), bell (ghanta), and drum are sounded during the Aarti.
