Navagraha Beej Mantra
नवग्रह बीज मन्त्र
The Navagraha Beej Mantras are the seed (bija) mantras of the nine planets (grahas) of Vedic astrology: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu. Each is a short, concentrated formula that invokes the deity of one planet to strengthen a weak or benefic graha and to pacify a malefic one in the birth chart, during transits (gochara), or in a Mahadasha period. They are the most common astrological remedy (upay) in Jyotish, chanted on the weekday ruled by each planet. The mantras below follow the classical Purohit Darpan tradition. Chant each one 108 times (one mala) on the planet's day, ideally at sunrise after a bath, with a calm and focused mind.

Frequently Asked Questions about Navagraha Beej Mantra
On which day should each Navagraha mantra be chanted?
Each planet rules a weekday: Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, and Saturn on Saturday. The shadow planets are usually chanted on the days nearest their nature: Rahu on Saturday and Ketu on Tuesday. The ideal time is sunrise (Brahma Muhurta), and 108 repetitions (one mala) is the standard daily count.
Which Navagraha mantra should I chant for my problem?
Chant the mantra of the planet causing the difficulty. For Saturn troubles or Sade Sati, use the Shani mantra; for marriage and relationship harmony, the Shukra (Venus) mantra; for studies and communication, the Budh (Mercury) mantra; for health and confidence, the Surya (Sun) mantra; for peace of mind, the Chandra (Moon) mantra. A Kundali analysis shows exactly which graha is weak or afflicted in your chart.
How many times should the mantra be chanted for a full remedy?
For daily practice, 108 repetitions (one mala) on the planet's day is the standard. For an intensive remedy, the classical Purohit Darpan tradition prescribes a 40-day japa with planet-specific counts (for example, 7,000 for the Sun and 23,000 for Saturn). The exact counts vary between traditions and lineages, so many devotees keep the simpler daily mala under the guidance of a qualified astrologer or priest.
Can the Navagraha mantras be chanted without initiation?
Yes. The Navagraha beej mantras and the simpler "Om [planet] Namah" forms are traditionally considered safe for any devotee to chant for daily worship and planetary peace. For very large japa counts (the 40-day sadhanas), and for Rahu and Ketu in particular, many practitioners recommend doing so under the guidance of a qualified Guru or astrologer.
