The Story
In a large household lived a young woman who was made to do the hardest work and was treated harshly by her in-laws while her husband was away earning a living in a far country.
One day she learned of the Santoshi Mata vrat — a simple Friday fast, taking only what is offered, and avoiding sour foods. She kept it faithfully, praying only that her husband return and her sorrows end.
Week by week the goddess, pleased with her contentment and constancy, began to bless her. Word reached her husband in the distant land, his own fortunes turned, and he set out for home with wealth enough to change their lives.
When he returned and their circumstances improved, the young woman held the concluding feast (udyapan) of the vrat. Even a small mishap with sour food, promptly set right, showed the family the goddess's power, and all came to honour Santoshi Mata.
