Ganesh Stotra

गणेश स्तोत्र

The Ganesh Stotra is built around the most universally recited Sanskrit shloka in Ganesha devotion: "Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha." These verses describe Lord Ganesha's magnificent form — his curved trunk, his immense radiance, his role as the remover of all obstacles — and petition him to bless every undertaking that is begun. This stotra is recited at the start of any puja, ritual, ceremony, or significant life event, for Ganesha's blessing is considered the prerequisite for success in all endeavors.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ganesh Stotra

What does "Vakratunda Mahakaya" mean?

"Vakratunda" means "one with a curved (vakra) trunk (tunda)" — a reference to Lord Ganesha's elephant trunk, which curves beautifully. "Mahakaya" means "one with a great (maha) body (kaya)" — describing Ganesha's large, powerful form. Together the phrase "Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha" means: "O Lord with the curved trunk and great body, who shines with the combined radiance of ten million suns." This opening line is perhaps the most widely recognized Sanskrit verse in all of Ganesha worship.

Why does Ganesha have an elephant's head?

The most popular mythological account says that Parvati created Ganesha from clay and gave him life, instructing him to guard her chamber. When Shiva returned and was blocked by this unknown boy, a battle ensued in which Shiva severed the boy's head. A grief-stricken Parvati demanded his restoration, so Shiva sent his attendants to bring the head of the first being they encountered — which was an elephant. Shiva attached the elephant's head to the boy's body and restored his life. The elephant head symbolizes supreme wisdom and memory.

Why is Ganesha called the remover of obstacles?

Ganesha is called Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) or Vighneshvara (lord of obstacles) because Shiva appointed him as the guardian of beginnings and the one who clears the path for righteous endeavors while placing obstacles in the way of unrighteous ones. His elephant's intelligence represents the ability to find a way through any difficulty, and his large mouse vehicle (representing the ego) shows that he masters even the most subtle obstacles. Worshipping him first ensures that one's path is cleared of hindrances.

What is the significance of Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi (also called Vinayaka Chaturthi) celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha and is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). The 10-day festival involves installing Ganesha idols in homes and public pandals, performing twice-daily pujas and Aartis, reciting the Ganesh Stotra and Chalisa, and distributing modaka sweets. On the 11th day, the idol is ceremonially immersed in a water body in a grand procession called Ganesh Visarjan, symbolizing the deity's return to his heavenly abode.

What is the best time to chant the Ganesh Stotra?

The Ganesh Stotra is ideally chanted before beginning any new activity, at the start of the day during morning prayers, before any study session, before business meetings or job interviews, and before all religious rituals. Wednesday (Budhwar) is Ganesha's day, making it the most potent day for dedicated Ganesha worship including the recitation of this stotra. The Chaturthi tithi (fourth lunar day) of every month is also auspicious for Ganesha worship.
