The Satyanarayan Puja is a worship of Lord Vishnu in his form as the "Lord of Truth", performed to give thanks and seek blessings on auspicious or celebratory occasions such as a housewarming, marriage, new venture or a wish fulfilled.

Purnima (full moon) is most auspicious; it may also be done on Ekadashi, Kartik/Vaishakh months, or any auspicious day, usually in the evening.

Samagri (Items Needed)

  • Idol or picture of Lord Satyanarayan (Vishnu)
  • Kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut
  • Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar
  • Banana, and sheera/panjiri (sooji, ghee, sugar) for bhog
  • Tulsi leaves, roli, kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice)
  • Betel leaves and nuts, flowers, a coconut
  • Ghee lamp, incense and camphor for aarti

Puja Vidhi (Step by Step)

  1. 1 Bathe, wear clean clothes and purify the space; sprinkle water and take achman.
  2. 2 Take a Sankalp (resolve) stating the purpose of the puja.
  3. 3 Worship Lord Ganesha and the Kalash first, then invoke Lord Satyanarayan.
  4. 4 Offer panchamrit abhishek, then flowers, roli, kumkum and akshat.
  5. 5 Light the lamp and incense and offer them to the Lord.
  6. 6 Recite or listen to the five chapters (adhyaya) of the Satyanarayan Katha with devotion.
  7. 7 Offer the sheera/panjiri bhog with tulsi leaves.
  8. 8 Perform the aarti with a ghee lamp and distribute the prasad to all present.
