Devotional Texts & Prayers
Saraswati (Sarasvatī) is the goddess of knowledge, learning, music, speech, and the arts, the consort of Brahma and the embodiment of Vidya (wisdom). Depicted seated on a white lotus holding the veena, the Vedas, and a rosary, she represents pure knowledge free of material desire. In Vedic astrology, Saraswati is associated with Mercury (Budh), the planet of intellect, speech, and learning, and is worshipped by students, scholars, artists, and musicians, especially on Vasant Panchami.

About Saraswati
Saraswati is invoked at the very start of education. The Vidyarambham and Aksharabhyasam ceremonies, in which a child writes their first letters, are performed in her name. On Vasant Panchami, students place their books and instruments before her image and set study aside for the day so the goddess may bless their learning. She is honoured across traditions: as the giver of speech (Vak), the patron of the sixty-four arts, and the river-goddess of the Rigveda. Her worship is central in schools, universities, and among classical musicians.
In Vedic astrology, Saraswati's domain of intellect, speech, memory, learning, and the arts corresponds to Mercury (Budh), the planet of communication and analytical intelligence. Students struggling with concentration, those with a weak or afflicted Mercury, and anyone in a Mercury Mahadasha are advised to worship Saraswati, recite the Saraswati Chalisa and Aarti, and chant the Saraswati Vidya Mantra, especially on Wednesdays (Budhvar) and Vasant Panchami. Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo) natives, both ruled by Mercury, particularly benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions about Saraswati
When is Saraswati worshipped?
The main day is Vasant Panchami (in Magha month, usually late January or February), the festival of spring and learning. Saraswati is also worshipped on Wednesdays (the day of Mercury), during the last three days of Navratri, and by students before examinations.
Why is Saraswati associated with Mercury (Budh)?
Mercury governs intellect, speech, learning, memory, and the arts, which are precisely Saraswati's domains. In Vedic astrology, strengthening Mercury through Saraswati worship is believed to aid studies, communication, clarity of thought, and skill in the arts.
What is Vasant Panchami?
Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring and is the principal day of Saraswati Puja. Devotees wear yellow, place books, pens, and musical instruments before the goddess, and begin a child's education (Vidyarambham) on this auspicious day.
How does Saraswati worship help students?
Reciting the Saraswati Chalisa and Aarti, chanting the Saraswati Vidya Mantra, and worshipping on Wednesdays and Vasant Panchami are believed to improve concentration, memory, and clarity of speech, and to strengthen a weak Mercury that may be hindering studies.
