Devotional Texts & Prayers

Kali (Kālī) is the fierce, primordial form of Adi Shakti, the Divine Mother as the power of time, dissolution, and liberation. Dark as the void, garlanded with skulls and standing upon Shiva, she is not a goddess of fear but of fearlessness: she destroys ego, illusion, and the bondage of death. The first of the ten Mahavidyas, Kali is the Shakti of Kala (Time itself). In Vedic astrology her energy is linked to Saturn (Shani), the lord of time and karma, and she is invoked to overcome the malefic effects of Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu.

About Kali

Kali is worshipped most intensely in Bengal, Assam, and eastern India, where Kali Puja is observed on the new-moon night (Amavasya) of Kartik, coinciding with Diwali. Her foremost seats are the great Shakti Pithas: Kalighat and Dakshineswar in Kolkata and Kamakhya in Assam. Though her form is terrifying, devotees approach her as Maa (Mother). The saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa worshipped Kali at Dakshineswar as the most tender of mothers. She destroys only what must end, so that the soul may be freed.

In Vedic and Tantric astrology, Kali is the Shakti of Kala (Time) and is therefore most closely linked to Saturn (Shani), the graha that governs time, karma, discipline, and dissolution. Her worship is recommended to soften the trials of Sade Sati, Shani Mahadasha, and afflictions of the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu, which rule deep fears and transformation. New-moon nights (Amavasya) and Saturdays are considered the most powerful times for her worship. Devotees recite the Kali Chalisa and Kali Aarti and chant her beej mantra Krīṃ for protection and the courage to face change.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kali

Which planet is associated with Maa Kali?

Kali is the Shakti of Kala (Time), so she is most closely linked to Saturn (Shani), the lord of time and karma. She is not tied to a single graha alone; her energy is also invoked to overcome the malefic effects of the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu.

When is Kali Puja celebrated?

Kali Puja falls on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Kartik month, the same night as Diwali, and is observed most grandly in Bengal and Assam. Saturdays and new-moon nights are also considered auspicious for worshipping Kali through the year.

Why does Kali stand on Shiva?

In her iconography, Kali (Shakti, the active power) stands upon the still body of Shiva (pure consciousness) to show that energy and awareness are inseparable. Her outstretched tongue depicts the moment she restrains her fury on realising she is standing on her own lord.

How does Kali worship help in Vedic astrology?

Worshipping Kali, reciting the Kali Chalisa and Kali Aarti, and chanting her beej mantra Krīṃ are traditional remedies during Sade Sati, Shani Mahadasha, and Rahu or Ketu afflictions, undertaken to gain courage, dissolve fear, and move through karmic difficulty.
